Pre-Sessional English Programmes

The Pre-sessional English courses are intensive and academically challenging courses intended for international students who are planning to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at an English-speaking university, but do not meet the English language entry requirements.

The course is designed to help you meet the English language entry requirements of your degree course and to prepare you for the academic skills needed at an English-speaking university.

During the course you will:

  • Improve your Academic English and become more confident in your use of the language
  • Develop your skills in understanding and analysing academic texts
  • Help you more fully understand lectures while taking effective notes
  • Develop your ability to select, use and reference appropriate academic sources
  • Develop your critical thinking skills
  • Build up your independent study
  • Build a degree of independence in the planning and organisation of your studies

Entry Requirements

You must have a minimum of IELTS 4.0 (with no less than 4.0 in any skill) for entry onto a pre-sessional course – the equivalent in any other secure English language test (SELT) will be accepted as proof of English language proficiency

Length of Course

The length of Pre-sessional English course you apply for depends on your current level of English. If you have a score higher than 4.0 you may be able to do a shorter course as outlined in the table below. The length of the course is also dependant on the English language level (both overall and for specific skills) required for entry onto your chosen future degree course. Furthermore, it is important to note that your individual progress will depend on numerous factors such as the intensity of the programme being followed; your aptitude and motivation; lesson attendance and the completion of homework, tests and assignments.
